Backing up your important data is one of the first lessons we learn as computer users. Normally we learn this the hard way. We doe years of work on our computer and are going merrily along and then one day without explanation your computer crashes.
So to solve this problem we start backing up our data. We burn CDs or in larger companies use sophisticated tape backup solutions etc.
But what about the time you are editing a work document and you happen to select a large block of text and accidentally delete it. Then to quickly save the day you close the document but with your years of training your fingers hit the save button before you realize what you have done. Re-open the document and all that work is lost! Really lost! I have heard this and a thousand other scene rios of how the data was lost.
You are in luck if you have Undelete installed on your computer. You simply go to your Recovery Bin (formerly known as the Recycle Bin) and you can simply browse your way to this deleted document and instantly restore it. And if you are like me working in Word and Excel much of the time, the Recovery Bin will have saved several versions of your document - one for each time you save it.
It may be hard to grasp the value of this. But just image that you have spent every evening for the past week working on a proposal and it is due tomorrow at 9 AM. At 10 PM you notice that you are missing a few key paragraphs that a legal professional coached you on. It is too late to call again. You are in BIG TROUBLE! But like magic - Undelete can save the day (but only if you installed it last week). You simply visit your Recovery Bin and review the various versions of the document that you created through out the last week. And Viola! There is that priceless set of paragraphs. Result - You get a good nights sleep and the project!
One of my favorite features of Undelete is that if you have deleted a file before installing, you can still recover it. I have used this feature with some of my clients to recover files accidentally deleted. One such story was a woman who had delete many folders of family photographs. She called me about in tears. I told her to shut down her computer and that I would be over in an hour. I arrived and began my work. She had not called me the moment this happened. It was now a week after the fact. There were some items that just could not be recovered. But I did recover about 80% of her family photos and she was so relieved.
