Using an anti-virus program is a necessary evil for safe computing.
That said, I liken using any anti-virus program to hitching up a 24 foot travel trailer to your new luxury sport sedan. The first thing you notice is that it just doesn't handle as well as you would expect. You don't quite have the acceleration power or stopping power you had. Some anti-virus programs can take away ridiculously large amounts of computing power requiring major hardware upgrades such as additional memory (RAM) or may even make you think you need a new computer.
The amount of computing power that anti-virus programs require to stop the bad guys has grown over the years. This is due in part to how clever the black hats have become, as well as the anti-virus makers attempt to impress with a fancy user interface.
I have done some almost scientific testing of the big anti-virus players; Norton, McAfee, Panda and Trend Micro. In a test lab, I tested all these against common tasks such as sending emails, copying files locally, copying files to a network location and running a ERP (enterprise resource planning) application. Norton was hands down the worst in performance. The other products performed similarly but did not impress.
Enter NOD32. This product is very lightweight. (Sort of changes that 24 foot trailer into a small case that drops in the trunk and leaves room for your golf clubs). I am personally and professionally using this product. It works well and so effortlessly that I hardly know it is there!
